By Caitlin Miles GRAFFITI IS on the rise in Linwood – reported incidents have nearly doubled in a month. Statistics from the city council show a jump in graffiti, from 55 in April to 102 in May. Incidents also increased in New Brighton – but not by as many. It went from 41 to 47 and Wainoni went up from 25 to 36. Linwood Park was also labelled as a graffiti hot spot with 11 incidents in May. Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Alexandra Davids said Linwood Park has been an ‘ongoing issue’ in terms of graffiti and vandalism. The city council locked the toilets in the park earlier this year in an effort to reduce the vandalism and graffiti being done to them. Ms Davids said the city council and graffiti team monitor the area and try to keep the area clear the graffiti as soon as possible. Thomson Park in New Brighton and Hampshire St in Aranui also fall into the hot spot category, both had five graffiti incidents.

News Ghostly trees to be removed Residents win fight to have them axed
EYESORE: The dead trees beside the Bridge St bridge and former Pleasant Point Yacht Club will be removed.
By Caitlin Miles and Sarla Donovan DEAD MACROCARPA and pine trees at the former Pleasant Point Yacht Club will be removed. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board agree the trees are an eyesore to people going to Southshore and South New Brighton. The Southshore Residents’ Association had urged the community board to get rid of the tress. The community board has requested city council staff remove the trees from the former yacht club “as soon as possible”. The association expressed its “shock” to the community board when it found out the city council had planned for the trees to remain a nesting spot for birds.
Association spokesman Simon Brown said neither he nor any other Southshore residents had ever seen any birds near the trees, which were “precariously balanced” and posed a health and safety risk for people using the estuary edge. South Brighton Residents Association chairman Hugo Kristensson agreed they should go. They were “ghostly” and “not very attractive,” he said. “We need to tidy the area up,
everyone agrees on that.” The community board has also requested city council staff remove the dead trees on the east estuary side of the Bridge St bridge opposite those on Rat Island, because they are seen as unsightly and in danger of falling. Salt water intrusion relating to the February 22, 2011, earthquake, had killed a number of trees around the Avon-Heathcote Estuary edge, some of which were removed in 2012.

In Brief BRIDGE ST PLANTING A workshop between the South Brighton and Southshore Residents’ associations, Coastal-Burwood Community Board and the city council’s arborist contractors could be held to discuss what should be planted on Bridge St. The preference is for pohutukawa trees. Previous plans to plant cabbage trees near the Bridge St bridge was given the thumbs down by the residents’ associations. PART OF MEDWAY REOPENS A section of Medway St, Richmond, which has been closed since May, will reopen on Thursday. The section from River Rd to Flesher Ave has been closed for flood remediation works. It is part of rolling road closures on Medway, Randall and Petrie Sts to install the southern bypass as part of the Dudley Creek Flood Remediation project. Road closures are expected to finish on August 28. LIBRARY NEEDS ARTISTS Artists from the eastern suburbs have an opportunity to submit their work for display at New Brighton Library. The city council has put the call out to see if an artist has a piece, or pieces, that would fit across 14 wooden panels measuring 86cm high and 58.5cm wide each. Countdown to supermarket Countdown‘s upcoming appeal will help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. Sarla Donovan visited cancer sufferer, eightyear-old Jacob Matua, who benefits from the equipment
JACOB MATUA has visited this place many times. He’s in the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre in the Riverside building at Christchurch Hospital, where’s he’s hooked up to an infusion pump dispensing the medicine he needs. It’ll be 10pm before this day’s treatment is over. After the eight-year-old started getting “headaches and tummy pain, neck pain, arm pain,” at the end of last year, a cancer diagnosis followed, along with nearly three months in hospital, getting treatment. Now he comes in for shorter stays – four days this time – and is crossing his fingers that he

Lucy Stephenson, who is supervising today, says he’s quite the card shark. “I win every time,” Jacob says with a grin. His aunt Ula Faamoe sits with him, too, giving his mum – who has four other children including twin three-year-old’s – a break. She says he’s well at the moment: “The best I’ve seen him since starting the chemotherapy. He’s making great progress.” Beside his bed, a tall pump stand holds all kinds of medicines and beeping equipment. The $5000 stand is one of four in the centre, purchased with money from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in 2013. Mrs Bond said it holds five to six pumps and keeps the medicines stable, as well as allowing nurses to easily read information on screens attached to the pumps. “DHBs find equipment like this hard to fund, because we can ‘make do’ with inferior (devices). It isn’t essential, but it just makes everybody’s life easier,” she said.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal chairwoman Ruth Krippner says most kiwi kids will visit hospital at some stage in their childhood. $18,000 for red zone signs By Bridget Rutherford MORE THAN $18,000 was spent on manufacturing and installing the new street signs in the residential red zone. The city council, in conjunction with the Avon Otakaro Network, have installed 94 street signs in the red zone to help people find their way. In addition, 26 new wayfinding signs were installed to point out main arterial routes around Horseshoe Lake, Avonside, Bexley and Dallington. City council head of urban regeneration, urban design and heritage Carolyn Ingles said it cost $13,920 to manufacture the new street signs, and $1196 for the wayfinding signs. Fulton Hogan Signs and Graphics installed them for free, she said. She said the city council did not remove the previous signs. “Following the earthquake, people moved out of the RRZ and a number of the existing street signs were taken as souvenirs.” But the new ones would not be so easy to take. They have been installed using brackets that can only be removed with the right tool. Ms Ingles said the brackets cost $3204. AvON spokesman Evan Smith said the signs were a mark of respect, and would make it easier for former residents to come back and see where their homes used to be.

Support for dairy owner By Sarla Donovan SOUTH BRIGHTON residents are rallying around the owner of their local dairy, who helped them out in the 2011 earthquake – after a bid to scuttle them from building a cafe and a fish and chip shop. But their 200-plus signature petition comes too late to affect a decision on whether the build will be allowed. The Resource consent application was heard on May 17, and a decision on information presented at the time of the hearing. A decision has not yet been made. Neighbours Brendan Moir and Patricia Claypoole objected to Christine Chen’s plans to build on a section next to her Union St dairy. Ms Claypoole and Mr Moir said in submissions they fear the building will be intrusive, unsightly and affect the resale value of their house. It would be 30m2 larger than the building that was there previously, and operate seven days a week, from 7am-8pm. Ms Chen became a favourite in the area after the February 22, Wainoni Avonside Community Trust took it upon themselves to celebrate the America’s Cup before tomorrow’s parade. The trust was so excited by Team New Zealand’s win, members dressed up in red, covered their building in red and had red themed biscuits to enjoy with their tea and coffee. They sang yachtingrelated songs and the national anthem to celebrate the victory.

in the earthquake. We would love to have a little cafe to catch up with all the neighbours.” A long-time Tovey St resident said she had signed the petition because she wanted a place for people to meet. “Before the earthquakes, we had three fish and chip shops, two hairdressers and a hotel and we’ve not had anything replaced.”

THE NEW Zealand Fire Service disappeared last Saturday. It ceased to exist. Fire and Emergency New Zealand began life in its place. It’s what we’ll be called into the future. What’s the reason? Until now, there have effectively been two fire services in the country. Those that covered urban settlements, towns and cities, and those that tackled mainly wildfire in more rural settings. To a certain extent, the boundaries were blurred and we generally co-operated as much as we could. The new Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act combines us into a single organisation, still with distinct urban and rural sides but working side by side. It’s got to be better. As far as most New Zealanders

For those of us in the new organisation, there’s some learning of new legislation but essentially it’s business as usual. Christchurch had a quiet week as the change occurred. Ten people got themselves trapped in a lift at a city bar in the early hours last Saturday morning. It took about half an hour to free them. And a fire truck was used to hold up a severed power pole in Barrington St after a car crash on Sunday evening which kept live wires off the street and power going for Spreydon homes. Finally, fire crews assisted ambulances at about 10 incidents where people suffered seizures and died suddenly. That’s about double a normal week.

The city council would have already removed them if they were a health and safety issue to humans. Not everything in nature is beautiful to everybody but everything has a place in evolution. Sarah Ruane – Christchurch School of Gymnastics is not a private company, it is a not-for-profit society. The current site is at risk of flood – every time it rains, the foam pits flood. There are more than 1000 young people using this facility, from little kids doing recreational gymnastics through to New Zealand representatives. These young people work incredibly hard and they deserve a facility that meets their needs. I really hope the Coastal-Burwood Community Board recognises just how much support there is for the rebuild in the local community. New campus hopes to liven up Brighton THE LATEST stage of the Grace Vineyard Beach Campus in New Brighton has been officially opened. Youth Alive Trust hosted the celebration of stage four’s completion by opening two more areas at the campus as part of its ongoing redevelopment. The two new spaces are both purpose-built music rooms with sound-proofing, acoustic panels, a recording desk and an outdoor pre-school play area with a fort, soft play matting and deck. The two spaces were able to open partially due to funding from Creative New Zealand, The Lion Foundation, Pub Charity Ltd, Playbases, the Grace Vineyard congregation and a Ministry of Education playgroup grant. More than 60 people attended the opening with speeches including young people, parents, funders and city councillor David East. Trust manager James Ridpath said while the build was an exciting step forward, the trust was looking forward to running more programmes for the community. “The building is just a tool, it’s the families attending the

playgroups, pre-schooler programmes, music tuition and youth bands who will benefit most,” Mr Ridpath said. He said the building was built with community use in mind.

SHIRLEY BOYS’ High will have two weeks to lick their wounds after a tough 15-20 loss to St Thomas’ in the UC Championship at the weekend. After 11 rounds, Shirley now sit 10th on the table after the loss at Linfield Park on Saturday. Their record is now four wins from 10 games. The competition takes a school holiday break until July 22, with a number of players attending the Crusaders under-18 development training camp at St Andrew’s College, which runs for the next two days. Glen Beardsley was the only Shirley player selected in the 61man squad. From those 61, 25 will be selected to play against the Hurricanes under-18 team on Saturday at 5.10pm in a curtain-raiser for the Crusaders v Hurricanes
match at Westpac Stadium. When they return to the competition for the final four rounds, Shirley will have St Andrew’s first up, who went into the break with a thumping 50-20 victory over Burnside at home. In other local games, Christ’s College beat Marlborough 31-21, CBHS grabbed a bonus point win over Rangiora 26-8, and Timaru Boys’ High stayed top of the table with a big 46-12 win over struggling St Bede’s College.

BURNSIDE HIGH is ruing poor early season form which has cost them a spot in the nationals. But coach David Williams is not looking to blame outside forces, saying it was gutting but entirely their own fault. Four teams were selected from the Connetics first XI football competition to compete at the Boys Lotto Premier Football Tournament in Napier from September 4-8. “A draw against Shirley and letting Cashmere back into the game, which also ended up being a draw, didn’t help. If either of those games had of been a win instead of a draw, then we would be in Napier,” he said. St Andrew’s College, St Thomas, Lincoln High and Cashmere High have all made the cut for the 32-team national tournament. The teams were picked during round eight when the top four included the selected teams. Burnside were fifth in round eight, but have since moved to third after wins against Middleton Grange and Lincoln High. In their match against Lincoln, Burnside also won the Connetics Shield for the

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. CURRIED TOMATO LAMB SHANKS Ingredients 1 Tbsp Olive oil 4 Lamb shanks, large 1 Onion, sliced 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 2 Tbsp Curry powder, medium 800g Tomatoes, chopped 2 cups Beef stock 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Place lamb shanks in an oven pan. Heat oil in a large frying pan, add onion and cook over a medium heat for five minutes to soften. Add garlic and curry powder, then cook for one minute more to release flavours. Add tomatoes and stock, bring to the boil, then pour the hot mixture over the lamb shanks. Cover dish and bake for two and a half to three hours, turning shanks once, until meat is very tender. Season sauce with salt and pepper to taste and serve with
vegetables of your choice.

Cook pasta in boiling salted water for eight to 10 minutes until al dente – just tender to the bite. Heat one tablespoon of oil, pine nuts, crumbs, one tbsp finely grated lemon rind, pitted and roughly chopped olives, roughly chopped anchovy, parsley and garlic in a frying pan, stirring until crumbs and pine nuts are lightly toasted. Heat a saucepan of water and cook the broccoli for four minutes until just tender. Drain

Test by piercing thickest part of the drumstick with a skewer. The juices that run out should be clear and not pink.
